Women's Health / Oral Contraception

Oral contraceptives are medications taken by mouth for the purpose of birth control.
Two types of female oral contraceptive pills are widely available: Combination oral contraceptive pills contain estrogen and a progestagen which are taken once per day. The progestogen-only pill ('POP') contains only progestogen, and is also taken once per day.

Women's Health / Other Contraception

Besides oral contraceptives, various other hormonal options to prevent conception are available, like gels and foams.
  • Vaginal contraceptive rings are thin, circular, flexible rings that are inserted into the vagina where it stays for 3 weeks.
  • Hormonal injections prevent pregnancy for a period of three months.
  • Hormone implants are thin, flexible pieces of plastic that are about the size of a matchstick and inserted under the skin of the upper arm. An implant prevents pregnancy for three years but can be removed at any time.
  • Transdermals are thin, flexible patches that are put on the upper arm, buttocks, stomach or chest once a week during three consecutive weeks.
  • Intrauterine devices (IUD's) are small, T-shaped devices that inserted into the uterus. Two kinds of IUDs are available. One contains copper and the other releases a small amount of the hormone progestin.

Women's Health / Female Hormone Replacement Therapy

A natural menopause occurs because, as women get older, the ovaries stop producing eggs and make less estrogens. The average age of women entering the menopause is between 45 and 55. The menopause can cause various symptoms such as hot flushes and changes to the vagina and genital skin.

Female Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is a treatment for women to reduce the symptoms of menopause. All types of Female HRT contain an estrogen hormone. HRT is available as tablets, transdermals, gels, nasal spray, foams and implants.

Women's Health / Fertility and Pregnancy

Hydroxyprogesterone caproate is used to prevent premature birth. Oxytocin is best known for its roles in female reproduction. It is released in large amounts during labor (facilitating birth) and to stimulate breastfeeding. During In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) programs, a woman may receive progesterone to prepare the uterus for the pregnancy.
